Allergies are often responsible for the eye irritation and discomfort many people experience as hot weather approaches. “Allergic eyes” are caused by overreaction to substances called allergens, which thrive in warm-and-dry or damp-and-musty weather.
Red, itchy, watery eyes occur when sensitive individuals are exposed to usually harmless allergens such as ragweed, grass, and pollen. As a result, the conjunctiva (the thin, transparent tissue that covers the eye and the inside of the eyelid) is irritated. The resulting symptoms are known as allergic conjunctivitis. Avoiding allergens is difficult, and prolonged use of over-the counter eye drops and antihistamines is not recommended. Contact lens patients are particularly susceptible to eye allergies at this time of year. The mechanical movement of the contact lenses irritates the thin conjunctiva even more in the presence of allergens.
Fortunately, there are brand-new eye medications on the market that both Dr Fauria and Dr Pirrone can prescribe for those itchy, red eyes. These new medications can be used safely throughout allergy season and are very effective in reducing bumpy, itchy, red eyes. Many of our Vision Service Plan (VSP) patients have an added benefit to their VSP coverage called Primary Eye Care that covers red, itchy eye visits.
